Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Eat an egg and cheer up!
Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.
If you want to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel better. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood also!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try these tips instead!
