The ingredients needed to make Tricolor paniyaram:
  1. Prepare 2 cups raw rice
  2. Get 1/2 cup urad dal
  3. Get 1/2 tsp methi
  4. Take 1/2 cup poha
  5. Make ready 1/3 cup spinach paste
  6. Make ready 2 tsp chana dal
  7. Take as required oil
  8. Make ready 1/3 cup carrot paste
  9. Make ready 1/3 tsp ginger grated
  10. Get 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

Paniyaram is a Tamil name, also known as Kuzhi Paniyaram also called Gunta ponganalu in Telugu, and Paddu in Kannada. It is also known by various other names in South India, including appe, guliappa, gulittu, gundponglu. You can make Spicy or sweet Paniyaram. Sweet Paniyaram using bananas, rice and jaggary that is also known as unniyappam.

Instructions to make Tricolor paniyaram:
  1. Soak rice,methi,chana dal and urad dal for 3 hrs,now grind this to fine batter along with washed poha,ferment overnight or 7-8 hrs.Divide batter in 3 different containers.Now add carrot paste, to one container.Add spinach paste, to another container to get green colour batter
  2. Leave the third container batter as it to get white colour.Now heat paniyarakkal tawa well,add oil in each compartments.Now simmer the heat and add a tsp of saffron batter,white batter,green batter.Apply little oil on sides and close lid and cook on medium flame.When they are ready,flip it and fry the other side till done - Enjoy with red and green chutney or with normal coconut chutney.

A special pan is used to make them and it is called as Paniyaram chatti Or appe pan. this special cookware has moulds in it and is similar to the æbleskiver pan used in european cooking. in the Indian market one gets both non-stick as well metal appe pans. Paniyaram is also known as gunta ponganalu, paddu, guliyappa in other South Indian languages. Paniyaram Recipe - Kuzhi paniyaram are ball shaped dumplings made with fermented urad dal and rice batter.
